*MEET* 30DA555 Maria

Passionate in the field of portable DX work, celebrated ham radio operator, and lover of books…

From Spain’s north-west coast, our Dx Adventure Radio Club (DA-RC) is delighted to welcome wonderful new member 30DA555 Maria.

Our newest member from the Kingdom of Spain is the better half of husband and experienced DX-Man 30DA441 Andoni who joined the club back in December, 2023!

One of only a handful of YLs in the club, Maria links with the DA-RC in November, 2024.

She’s excited to resume DX Hunting on the 11m band with her new Delta-Alfa callsign through the continuation of Solar Cycle 25.

Immersed in radio communications for some 40 years, 30DA555 Maria has extensive experience in the hobby…

On the 11m band, she has past memberships with the Romeo Charlie (RC) and Sugar Delta (SD) clubs respectively, and is determined to add to her list of divisions worked in the years to come carrying the flag for DA.

In addition to being a successful, award winning multi-band DX Hunter, 30DA555 Maria is also experienced in the realm of Parks On The Air (POTA).

In fact, history reveals that she has completed several POTA projects in the past 12 months, in addition to accumulating more than 100 parks of her own via more than 450 QSOs.

30DA555 Maria is also a keen LOTA enthusiast.

On ham bands, she has activated the Castillo de Santa Ana (Shown above and right) for the World Lighthouse Day in the town of Roquetas de Mar (Almería).

As well as being the site of a lighthouse, it’s also an oblong shaped fortification—built between the 16th and 17th centuries—which was used as a refuge for the inhabitants who lived near the port.

The DA Membership form indicates that 30DA555 Maria resides in Cantabria, an autonomous community and picturesque province in northern 30 Division.

Her QTH here is Castro Urdiales, a seaport situated on the Bay of Biscay.

Castro Urdiales is a modern town, although its castle and the Gothic-style parish church of Santa María de la Asunción, are known to date from the Middle Ages.

Its chief industries are tourism, fishing, and oil-packing of fish, especially sardines and anchovies.

The Lolin and La Castreña anchovy canning factories serve as a reminder of the town’s closeness to this industry and its proximity to the sea and a renowned local attractions.

Located near the sea, the monument complex of Castro Urdiales, also known as Puebla Vieja, has medieval origins and was declared a Conjunto histórico in 1978.

The amazing Church of Santa María de la Asunción is in Gothic style.

Built under the protection of King Alfonso VIII of Castile in the 13th century, this National Monument is a basilica church with three naves.

In the interior are the images of the White Virgin and the Reclining Christ, and three Gothic carvings of the Magi.

Other sights include the ruins of the medieval tower of the Templars, in Allendelagua, on the mountain side, the City Hall (16th century) and several caves which house rock carvings and paintings from the Upper Paleolithic period, which depict animals such as deer, goats and horses

30DA555 Maria uses a Yaesu FT-857 transciever with a GP-27 antenna, a glass fiber ground-plane antenna of the triple-leg type, factory tuned for 27 MHz.

When she’s not combining DX with her love of the outdoors and travel, 30DA555 Maria (Shown right) enjoys eating out and restaurants and cafes, listening to music and losing herself in a good book.

It’s the perfect way to relax and the ideal activity when her husband 30DA441 Andoni has hijacked the  microphone hihi!
