Exciting news for eleven meter band Island Hunters is that 14DA049 Fred will lead an experienced dxpedition team to picturesque islands on the air (IOTA) entity Île de Ré for Part 2 of the 2022 World Islands Festival (WIF).
Just 30 km long and five km wide, Île de Ré is an island off the Atlantic coast of France near La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime, on the northern side of the Pertuis d’Antioche strait.
Part of the Poitou-Charentes Region IOTA Group (EU-032) which also includes Aix, Fort Boyard, Fort Enet, Oleron islands, this charming island was last activated in 2014 by members of the Alfa Tango and Delta X-ray clubs respectively, according to well known data base Islands Base Online (IOB).

Proudly standing on the Pointe des Baleines, the Phare des Baleines Lighthouse provides an exciting Lighthouse On The Air (LOTA) opportunity also, for those lucky enough to work the team’s IOTA station.
This maritime structure possesses the reference FRA-136 in accordance with the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society’s World List of Lights.

In addition to its 18th century lighthouse, Île de Ré is known for its salt marshes and beaches like the Plage de la Conche des Baleines, backed by dunes and pine trees.
The main town of St-Martin-de-Ré has the 17th-century Fortifications of Vauban, plus outdoor cafes overlooking the marina while bicycle paths crisscross the island.
