*MEET* 3DA020 Ren

…Notable DXpeditioner. Competitive ham contester. Sharp-edged Freeband DX Hunter…

Seen pictured below and right, these are the perfect phrases to describe new member 3DA020 Renato (“Ren”) who hooks up with the Dx Adventure Radio Club (DA-RC) in February, 2024, in the heart of an exciting new solar cycle!

A native of the Federative Republic of Brazil, 3DA020 Renato has been immersed in radio comms since he was 13 years old.

Working as 3TRC101 on the 11m band, he achieved commendable DX Hunter targets, and easily satisfies DA-RC membership criteria in the ‘DX Hunter’ category.

This highly respected guy also shares our club’s core values which include Determination, Accomplishment, Resourcefulness and Collaboration,

As well as an appetite for citizens band operations in his early teenage years, history reveals that 3DA020 Ren has been an accredited ham radio operator since 2010 also.

Since this time he’s made significant contributions, in particular, to the field of Islands On The Air (IOTA) dxpedition work.

In fact, Ren’s hefty experiences in this arena are incredibly enviable…

Data bases reveal that our newest 3 Div team member (Shown above and below in the thick of dx adventure) has been QRV from roughly 20 North and South American islands—as well as several rare DXCC entities—in the past 10 years!

San Andreas (81 Division), Palmas and Providencia islands are highlights of an IOTA dx adventure resume which also includes Suriname (73 Division), a tiny country on the northeastern coast of SA, swathed in tropical rainforest.

We’re delighted that Ren will be active soon from any number of exciting locations under the DA-RC banner!

A survey of the interior of the world’s fifth-largest country uncovers that 3DA020 Ren resides in the river-side city of Belém.

This is known to be the capital and largest city of the state of Pará, tucked away in Brazil’s north-eastern corner.

Curiously, Belém is the main port for Amazon River craft and served by international and coastal shipping companies.

This makes it an ideal launchpad for Inland Water Island (IWI) and IOTA DXpedition work.

In fact, 3DA020 Ren’s city is surrounded by an endless number of potential dxstinations that would have any genuine Island Chaser frothing at the mouth.

One of the most visited cities in the Amazon region, Belém is famous for its important and historic fortifications, churches, monuments, parks and museums.

These include places such as Theatro da Paz, Emílio Goeldi Museum, Mangal das Garças Park, Ver-o-Peso and possible Castles and Fortresses On The Air (COTA) DXstination, Feliz Lusitânia (Pictured below).

Belém is also noted for its cultural and religious events such as the Círio de Nazaré, the largest Christian procession in the country; the Belém Fashion Days and Amazônia Fashion Week.

Inside his home on the banks of Guajará Bay and the Guamá River, 3DA020 Ren has accumulated an impressive station; one that’s incredibly versatile and exceptionally well-equipped to tackle DX on any band.

Enriched by an Expert 1.3k-FA power amplifier, modern FT-DX-10 and FT-710 transceivers by powerhouse ham brand Yaesu provide first class TX-RX capability in one of the biggest and best DX markets on the planet.

Both armed with advanced digital RF technology, these contemporary rigs share desk space with several top notch dx-cessories branded by such names as MFJ, Palstar and Diamond, more often than not linked with DX royalty.

Unsurprisingly for a guy of this panache, outside his home is an antenna farm of eye-catching beauty; a conglomerate of wires, verticals and yagis targeting interminable frequency allocations.

For eleven meter band DX-atisfaction, 3DA020 Ren employs a Force 12 C3 7 Element Yagi which is erected high above neighbouring tree-lined streets.

Rated at 5KW and boasting impressive f/b + dBi specs, this DX behemoth is one of the finest directional antennas of its era, almost assuring log book entries on a mostly volatile HF DX band.

3DA020 Ren escapes the typically equatorial WX and high rainfall of his city with his wife, friends and family, enjoying dinners at restaurants, and often listening to lambada, brega pop and carimbó rhythms.

He’s also a keen football fan and supports 1 of 3 clubs based in Belém—Clube do Remo.

Known affectionately as “Remo”, this club competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C, the third tier of Brazilian football, as well as in the Campeonato Paraense, the top flight of the Pará state football league.

An interesting fact is that 3DA020 Ren’s city also hosts the nautical regatta Rallye Iles du Soleil or Rallye Transamazone.

This is an annual international event that highlights the tourist potential of the cities along the route.

“I’m a Telecom Engineer and travel around the northern South America area,” explains Ren.

“I’m always carrying my HF radio where I go, so when there’s a chance, I get on HF bands…”

On Freeband frequencies, 3DA020 Ren is accessible on the International call channel, 27.555 MHz USB.

He’s keen to exchange QSL cards and his personal card is available via the coordinations below, to confirm any contact made with his DX station!
