The DXpeditioner ranks of our Dx Adventure Radio Club (DA-RC) continue to flourish with the acquisition of one of South America’s premium and most experienced dx adventurer Men in 3DA018 Renner.
Certified ham; prosperous Freeband DX Hunter; and an ultra-experienced dxpedition guy in the world’s seventh most populous country, “The Land of Parrots”, 3DA018 Renner (Seen pictured above) links with our great club in early March, 2024.
From his home in the Federal Republic of Brazil—one of the major DX markets of the world—3DA018 Renner is enormously excited at the prospect of creating fantastic new memories with his new Delta-Alfa callsign upon the arrival of Solar Cycle 25.
Historically speaking, 3DA018 Renner has been involved in the hobby since 1997, earning him almost 25 years’ experience in the vibrant 11m DX landscape.
As a 13 year old rookie—new to the game of radio comms—Renner became obsessed with the adrenalin rush of hunting DX and radio sports on the 11m band.
Respectfully, years spent with the Sugar Delta and Alfa Tango clubs honed his craft; including his ability to navigate pileups in contests and other radio athletic events.
Pushing the limits of armchair DX, however, developed into a love of Islands On The Air (IOTA) dxpedition work on 27 MHz and ham bands and it’s in this field where Renner excels.
Based on his super impressive resume—one which lists an incredible nine x World Islands database references—3DA018 Renner can now lay claim to being one of the most formidable islands DXpeditioners on the eastern coast of the South America continent.
Two renowned dxpeditions, in fact, were to the juicy San Andres & Providencia (NA-033) and Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (SA-003) IOTA Groups and it’s to these same elusive entities that our high-profile dx adventurist will soon visit for the DA-RC and our hamlet of heightened island chasers.
Not only does 3DA018 Renner satisfy DA-RC Membership conditions in the DXpedition Category, but he also sledgehammers down prerequisites in the DX Hunter section with more than 100 DXCC and 500 IOTA worked and confirmed.

These days, however, 3DA018 Renner is a university educated civil engineer.
His day to day work involves planning, designing, and supervising the construction and maintenance of building and infrastructure projects which includes bridges, roads, tunnels, and water and sewage systems.
Away from the complexities of civil engineering, 3DA018 Renner lists Numismatics as another of his favourite pastimes.
A little known niche amusement, Numismatics is the appraisal or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, medals and related objects.
It’s the perfect sideline hustle for DXCC dxpedition work where encounters with foreign currencies are part and parcel of the experience.
Fascinatingly, Numismatists also study the physical properties, production technology, and historical context of specimens of currency.
According to the updated DA-RC Directory, 3DA018 Renner resides in a multi-story apartment in a dense urban area of Recife, known as Boa Viagem.
Interestingly, the capital of Pernambuco, this fascinating QTH was once a collection of simple fishing shacks, inns and warehouses.
Due to the city’s proximity to the equator, Recife is located amidst thick tropical forests which are distinguished by high rainfall levels, warm WX and an abundance of animals and plant species.
Affectionately nicknamed “The Venice of Brazil”, 3DA018 Renner’s city is formed by 3 islands (Recife, Santo Antônio, and Boa Vista), crisscrossed by bridges and sidelined by rivers.
These alone represent alluring challenges indeed for Inland Water Island (IWI) Hunters.
3DA018 Renner’s neighborhood—Boa Viagem—is an extensive and populous upscale locality located in the South Zone of the city.
One of its main features is known to be its position along the Atlantic Ocean, where the Onde Boa Viagem beach is also located.
Avenue Boa Viagem, which cuts through the beach coast neighborhood completely, is on the seafront.
It’s a city famous for its beaches, as well as its shops, restaurants, bars, hotels, nightclubs, schools and large buildings, mainly on Avenida Boa Viagem, the most refined residential address in the city.
As well as its beaches, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem (Shown below left), which gave its name to the neighborhood, is a popular tourist attraction.
By all reports, it’s a neighborhood where, as a passionate dx enthusiast, 3DA018 Renner battles high man-made noise levels caused by dirty electronics and electrical circuits that impact his listening comfortability.
Admirably, however, this doesn’t appear to hinder our newest Division 3 team member!
3DA018 Renner’s multi-purpose station consists of an Icom IC-7300 transceiver with a built-in automatic antenna tuner, real-time spectrum scope and high-resolution waterfall function.
The rig is modified, of course, for general coverage which enables Renner to employ the radio’s superior filters to minimize QRM.
3DA018 Renner’s antennas consist of a menacing 18.0 ft. boom length Cushcraft A4S tri-bander—which tunes up nicely on 11m too—a DIEX multiband rigid dipole and a 6 meters 5 element LFA yagi.
Interestingly, the antennas are mounted on a small self-supported tower on the roof of a 6 floors building, roughly 22m off the ground.
The kit-up ensures 3DA018 Renner is always in the ballpark of DX work, regardless of the band, and at the mercy of DX Hunters around the globe who strive for 3 Division DX Contacts!
