On an ancient island in the Mediterranean Sea, the Dx Adventure Radio Club (DA-RC) revels in the opportunity to introduce to you buzzing DXpeditioner, accomplished DX Hunter and polished project administrator, 165DA101 Alessandro.
Linking with the DA-RC in early April, 2024, 165DA101 Alessandro (Seen pictured right) resides on the second-largest IOTA dxstination in the Mediterranean Sea, behind Sicily……Sardinia Island.
Belonging to Italy (1 Division), this stunning QTH is second in size only to Sicily (EU-025) amongst the postcard-perfect islands of the western region.
According to the World Atlas, Sardinia lies 200 km west of the mainland of Italy, 12 km south of the neighbouring French island of Corsica (104 Division), and 200 km north of Tunisia (147 Division) on the Atlantic coastline of Africa.
Referenced as EU-024 in keeping with the famous World IOTA Program, 165DA101 Alessandro’s island is celebrated for its breathtaking shores, it’s profound historical roots, and exquisite gastronomy.
Crystal clear waters and unspoiled beaches such as Costa Rei, furthermore, offer bliss to those who love the ocean and are passionate about leisure activities involving the sea.
Speaking of paradise and 165DA101 Alessandro is a resident of Portoscuso, a charming fishing village in the Province of South Sardinia, some 75 km west of the capital—Cagliari—and about 14 km northwest of Carbonia.
Here, an imposing 16th-century tower (See left) dominates part of the skyline, purportedly adding to the unique character of this little town.
But Portoscuso is best known for its tuna fishing industry, a trade that has its own local festival!
History reveals that 165DA101 Alessandro began his interest in HF radio comms back in 1987.
Like many guys in the course of their life, he took some time away from the hobby to pursue other challenges but has still managed to bank a commanding 178 Divisions.
Moreover, 153 of those entities have been by confirmed by QSL card which is a terrific strike rate indeed!
As well as qualifying for DA-RC Membership via the DX Hunter category, 165DA101 Alessandro also meets requirements in the DXpeditioner section.
See: https://www.delta-alfa.com/about/membership/
Astoundingly, he’s undertaken more than 400 portable activations—most of which have been carried out in the past few years from vantage points across the island.
The arenas of Summits On The Air (SOTA) and Parks On The Air (POTA) are, reportedly, 2 of his favourite dx adventure projects.
165DA101 Alessandro also reveals a strong interest in Islands On The Air (IOTA), exposing several islands off the coast of the main island which have never before been activated on 11m, as potential targets.
165DA101 Alessandro’s pioneering character is also evident in his creation of The Sardinian Beauties Award, and an eye-catching website, which provides information about how the award works.
Sure to be a massive hit with his fellow DA’s, as well as the 11m community at large, this concept is aimed at “enhancing and promoting the greatest possible number historical, cultural and tourist sites interest in Sardinia…”

As the picture shows, 165DA101 Alessandro’s home shack reveals a multi-band, multi-mode mobile/portable Yaesu FT-891 transceiver as his principal DX apparatus.
An innovative rig with an ultra-compact and rugged case, 32 bit high speed floating Point DSP and 100 watts TX power, this radio is said to be ideal for portable DX work, just as it is as a space-efficient home base solution.
In addition to the Yaesu, 165DA101 Alessandro also has two President Jackson radios with DDS-VFO modifications.
In fact, he prefers these purpose built rigs for use on 27 MHz frequencies.
165DA101 Alessandro’s antenna for work on the 11m band is a 3 element Delta-Loop by Italian company SmarTech.
For portable ops, he chooses a 3 element Skypper made by fellow DA-RC member, 1DA007 Darek.
Rivalling his love of radio comms is an appetite for music and 165DA101 Alessandro “has a passion for amateur music composition and production…”
On this SoundCloud page you can listen to some of his works: HERE!
When he’s not working DX in the field from some mountain summit (no doubt with music playing in the background), or enjoying the adrenalin raging atmosphere of his home DX Shack, 165DA101 Alessandro works as a telecommunications technician in the police force.
In particular, he deals with the management of a Critical Te.T.Ra Network.
Another of 165DA101 Alessandro’s impressive dexterities is his multilingual skills.
As a matter of fact, this gifted DX Pundit can conduct QSOs in 5 languages: Italian, English, French, German and Spanish!
The world-wide call frequency—27.555 MHz USB—is where you’ll find our new Freeband personality and whether it’s in Italian, Spanish or any one of his other dialects, his CQ Calls will always be one of the loudest when the propagation window is open!
Ola Alessandro muito bem escutado no Brasil 5/9 de sinal 73
