*MEET* 72DA010 Edgar

“Some operators chase signals.

Others chase understanding, connection, and the quiet magic that happens when the ionosphere opens and the world suddenly feels smaller…”

72DA010 Edgar belongs firmly in the second group—and it’s with genuine excitement that the Dx Adventure Radio Club welcomes him, having linked with our club in early February, 2026.

According to the updated DA-RC Directory, 72DA010 Edgar calls San Lucas Sacatepéquez, Guatemala home, operating from the spectacular highlands just west of Guatemala City…

Elevated terrain, cool mountain air, and clean take-off angles give his station a natural advantage, but it’s the setting itself that feels perfectly matched to his style of operating.

Rolling hills, forested landscapes, and distant volcanoes frame a QTH that invites experimentation, portable work, and long evenings spent chasing far-off signals across the bands.

A licensed amateur radio operator and former Alfa Tango member, 72DA010 Edgar is a familiar and well-respected voice within the regional radio community…

His journey through the hobby spans more than 40 years, touching nearly every corner of the radio world: DXpeditions, portable activations, contesting, voice and digital modes, antenna construction, equipment repair, and relentless hands-on experimentation.

Radio, for this “Guatemalteco”, has never been a single lane—it’s an entire landscape to explore.

That explorer’s spirit shows clearly in his operating record.

A seasoned regional DXpeditioner and dedicated contester, 72DA010 Edgar has taken part in countless worldwide contests on both 11 meters and the amateur bands…

It’s a passion that has fueled his growth since his earliest days on the air.

Among his standout achievements is an extraordinary one: more than 300 DXCC worked and confirmed on the 11-meter band, a milestone that speaks to patience, skill, and an intimate understanding of propagation.

A familiar presence on the bands, 72DA010 Edgar is known to regularly monitor the International Call QRG, 27.555 MHz USB…

He’s always listening for new signals, rare openings, and the unexpected DX that can turn an ordinary session into something memorable.

For Edgar, Triple 5 is more than a calling frequency—it is a global meeting point, where discipline, timing, and courtesy still matter.

Despite his longevity in the hobby, 72DA010 Edgar continues to find joy in the traditions that first captured his imagination…

An exchange of QSL cards—handled through his trusted QSL Manager—remains just as satisfying today as it was when he was a newcomer, each card a tangible confirmation that somewhere beyond the horizon, another operator heard his call and answered.

In a fast, digital world, Edgar still values the human connection preserved in ink, paper, and patience.

72DA010 Edgar’s station reflects both versatility and deep technical understanding…

For portable and field operations, Edgar relies on the XIEGU G90 HF multimode transceiver, a compact SDR equipped with a waterfall display, internal antenna tuner, Morse code decoder, and speech compressor.

Feeding the ether is a Solarcon Antron A-99 vertical antenna, prized for its dependable omnidirectional performance.

Surrounding this core is a formidable collection of equipment that reads like a love letter to radio engineering: Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark-V, FT-857D, FT-840, FT-890, FT-757GX-II, FT-7800, FT1D; Icom IC-706 MKIIG; Kenwood TS-680S and TS-450S; and the AnyTone AT-D868UV.

By profession, 72DA010 Edgar is a Systems Engineer…

It’s a role that perfectly mirrors his reputation as a skilled technician and genuine “Mr Fix It.”

Whether restoring ageing rigs, building antennas, or pushing equipment into experimental territory, he brings the same calm precision to the bench as he does to the microphone.

Yet for 72DA010 Edgar, the hobby has always been about people…

He treasures the camaraderie of radio communications, and his home has become a crossroads for operators from Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Spain, France, and Slovenia.

Some arrive to operate, others to work or travel—but all are welcomed the same way: with conversation, shared stories, and a good cup of coffee once the radios fall quiet.

As 72DA010 Edgar himself says:

“I am more interested in DX and its variations—expeditions, activations, contests, voice, digital, building antennas, repairing equipment, and experimenting in the wonderful world of radio…”

Beyond the shack, 72DA010 Edgar’s curiosity extends into many areas…

Hiking, travel, chess, astronomy, science, physics, and communication in all its forms—interests that echo his on-air life: thoughtful, exploratory, and endlessly curious.

For this inspiring “Chapine”, though, radio remains the ultimate bridge—turning distant voices into mates, and contacts into bonds that grow stronger when on-air connections become face-to-face meetings, even if only for a few hours or days.

📌 Please join us in warmly welcoming 72DA010 Edgar to the Dx Adventure Radio Club—an operator whose signal carries far more than RF!
