*MEET* 43DA101 Steve

“Decades of DX mastery, a passion for radio, Aussie Rules Footy and music, and a life grounded in family and community define the journey of Aussie DX Hunter 43DA101 Steven…”

Our Dx Adventure Radio Club (DA-RC) is thrilled to welcome 43DA101 Steven, who officially joins the club in mid-January 2026 and immediately takes his place in DA-RC’s premiership squad.

A Queensland DX veteran with decades of experience behind the mic, Steven is the kind of bloke every team wants on its roster — respected, disciplined, and known for playing the DX game with integrity.

A Veteran Player in the DX League

From his home QTH on Australia’s east coast, 43DA101 Steven brings an eye-catching DX record to DA-RC, with more than 200 DXCC worked and 192 confirmed — an exceptional feat for an Oceania-based operator…

He comfortably meets the stringent criteria for DA-RC’s DX Chaser Category, a benchmark that reflects skill, persistence, and a relentless pursuit of the rare and elusive.

That kind of record doesn’t happen by chance – In addition to a top station featuring the 5 element yagi above, it’s the result of patience, discipline, and years of experience reading propagation, timing openings, and capitalizing when conditions align.

Brisbane Home Base — Queensland DX Territory

According to the DA-RC Membership Directory, 43DA101 Steven is based in Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland…

This is a major ham and 27 MHz comms hub and one of Australia’s most active radio regions.

The state of Queensland has long been fertile ground for DX-Men, with favourable propagation paths to Pacific nations and the Americas in particular, a bustling operating community, and a deep history across the 11-metre band when Tweed Radio and Delta Tango callsigns once ruled!

Operating from ‘Brizzy’ places Steven right in the heart of Queensland DX country, with easy access to fellow DA-RC members throughout South-East Queensland and beyond — ideal for collaboration, events, and future DX adventures to any one of the region’s Lighthouses, Fortresses, Islands, Inland Water Islands, ‘Beauties’ (See WBA), etc.

Queensland’s Natural Beauties — A DX Playground on the Doorstep

43DA101 Steven is surrounded by some of Australia’s most spectacular natural environments, all within easy reach across South-East Queensland…

To the south lie the world-famous Gold Coast beaches, stretching along the Pacific Ocean and backed by a network of offshore islands that are highly attractive to island hunters and portable DX operators.

South East Queensland is also home to several iconic IOTA entities, including Fraser Island (K’gari) — the world’s largest sand island — along with North Stradbroke Island and Moreton Island.

These islands are internationally recognised in IOTA circles and remain highly desirable DXstinations for future activations.

Closer to home, SEQ is a treasure trove for Inland Water Island (IWI) activity that could see Steven and 1 or 2 other DA members jamming in the World Islands Festival (WIF) in the years to come…

Rivers, bays, reservoirs, sandbanks, canals, and estuarine islands number in the hundreds here, offering endless possibilities for low-impact portable ops, club outings, and special-event activations.

For a DX operator of Steve’s experience, this mix of urban base, coastal access, offshore islands, and inland waterways represents a true DX playground — perfectly aligned with the DA-RC ethos of exploration and adventure radio.

A Long Career — Back in the Game

43DA101 Steven first entered the hobby in the 1970s…

He later stepping away to pursue other interests before returning over the past 11 years with renewed energy — much like a seasoned player re-entering the competition with fresh hunger and perspective.

Previously active with the Alfa Tango Club, he held the callsigns 43AT122 and 43AT101.

On 27 MHz CB he was also known as Polar Bear and 43 Zulu Whisky 122.

Today, Steve is both an avid 11-metre DX operator and a licensed amateur, firmly back in the game and widely respected across the bands.

A Station Built Like a Premiership Team

Steven’s station carries a strong Yaesu pedigree, built around the Yaesu FT-991A and FT-710, paired with a Yaesu MD-100 microphone and a solid suite of DX-ready accessories…

Outside, his station is anchored by an imposing 5-element Yagi, mounted on a home-built tower approximately 10 metres high, overlooking the surrounding streets — a commanding setup, much like a tall forward taking a strong mark inside the 50.

When conditions open up, Steve is always ready to take the game on.

A True Footy Supporter

Away from radio, 43DA101 Steven is a passionate Australian Rules Football supporter, proudly backing the mighty Collingwood Magpies in the national competition…

He’s also a huge fan of cricket, darts, fishing, and music, making him a genuine sporting all-rounder.

A proud dad, proud grandparent, dog owner, and keen gardener, Steven values family, community, and a life lived outdoors.

He’s also the owner and administrator of the Facebook page “Music Revival 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s,” where his love of classic music continues to connect people across generations.

A Community Player with a Heart for Others

Professionally, 43DA101 Steven works as a school bus driver…

He spends around 90 minutes each morning and afternoon safely transporting special-needs children to and from school.

It’s a role that demands patience, responsibility, and care — qualities that reflect the character of a true team player and carry through into his approach to radio and community involvement.

A DA-RC Champion

Within the global 11-metre DX community, 43DA101 Steven is known as a committed DX hunter, an enthusiastic QSL card collector, and a loyal supporter and sponsor of DXpeditions…

He brings the same dedication, professionalism, and quiet reliability to the DA-RC that he brings to every other part of life — making him a natural fit for the club.

From ‘Brisvegas’ and across the Sunshine State to the farthest reaches of the DX world, we look forward to many great QSOs, plenty of rare ones in the log, and your ongoing passion for dx adventure.
