*DX NEWS* Icom Supplies Radios to Victims

(Bellevue, WA) – Icom Inc. supplied two-way radios for people temporarily returning to their homes after being evacuated due to the nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan.

The effort was based on a contract that recognized Icom Inc. as first responder by the Japanese government.

This contract states that Icom Inc. will provide radios within 48 hours of an emergency.

Icom service staff visited Fukushima with radios and batteries and provided training on how to use radios while wearing protective gear.

All those who were returning home had limited time and were required to wear radiation gear.

Icom incorporated, headquartered at Hirano-ku, Osaka, Japan, and President Tsutomu Fukui have donated 600 transceivers to support relief and restoration activities at the disaster site affected by the Tohoku area Pacific Coast earthquake and tsunami.

Transceivers are in demand as communication tools where the communications infrastructure has been destroyed, as these devices can be used without relying on commercial electricity.

In addition, since transceivers make it possible for a lot of rescue staff to be in touch with each other simultaneously, they are especially suited in disaster situations like this.

As relief goods, Icom sent a total of 300 sets of the IC-4100, a license-free low power radio, together with battery packs and chargers.

They were distributed to the Disaster Control Headquarters established in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima Preferences, respectively.

Also, in response to the requests from JAIA (Japan Amateur Radio Industries Association), Icom will also donate equipment to JARL (Japan Amateur Radio League) in the form of 200 sets of the amateur handheld transceivers with battery packs and chargers.

Finally, another 100 digital IC-D50 radios were provided to the RMK (Rikujyo Musen Kyokai), the association of land mobile radios.

We would like to express our deepest condolences to those who have been affected by this earthquake, and hope that the rebuilding and return to normal daily routines will happen as soon as possible.
