From the continent of South America, the Dx Adventure Radio Club is delighted to present to you 3DA016 Marcos from the Federative Republic of Brazil.
Like many DA-RC members, 3DA016 Marcos is a licensed ham radio operator whom also possesses a passion for 27 MHz operations!
A professional and well-known guy, 3DA016 Marcos connects with our club in March 2022, achieving DA-RC membership through the DX Hunter category with more than 100 DXCC worked and confirmed.
See https://www.delta-alfa.com/about/membership/ .
3DA016 Marcos is a former member of the Romeo Charlie (RC) group in which his callsign was 3RC051.
He looks forward to assuming some new challenges in Cycle 25 with his new Delta-Alfa QRZ, though, among them dxpedition work to some of the nearby Atlantic islands with other members of the 3 Div DA-RC Team.
One potential offshore dxstination which is sure to capture the attention of serious Island Chasers in the 11m DX Community is Arvoredo Island.
According to the Islands Base Online (IBO) database, this diminutive island was last activated in 1999.
The World IOTA program has Arvoredo Island as part of the Santa Catarina State North IOTA group.
It’s also part of the Arvoredo Marine Biological Reserve, and shares the reference SA-027 with 27 other nearby islands.
(See https://iota-world.org/islands-on-the-air/iota-groups-islands/group/1079.html and http://www.islands.upway.pl/find_for.php?do=search&pr=&io=SA-027&re=&na=)
‘Ilhas do Arvoredo’ takes its name from the sailor Alvares Soares de Oliveira, whom was one of the first soldiers to take care of the island’s lighthouse (See below).
In addition to being one of the 11m community’s biggest DX markets, Brazil possesses unique cuisine, rich culture, some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, breathtaking waterfalls, and so much more.
3DA016 Marcos resides in Balneário Camboriú, a coastal beach and resort city in the Brazilian southern state of Santa Catarina.
The city, with its steep hills dropping down to the Atlantic, is popular amongst South Americans for its high-rise buildings and beaches such as Praia Central and Laranjeiras.
Seen pictured above, 3DA016 Marcos’ city also boasts many other wonderful features that support the leisure time of locals, as well as the many thousands of tourists who flock there each year.
Bars, restaurants and shops line Avenida Atlântica (Atlantic Avenue), a busy boulevard next to the beach, while Unipraias Park sits at the mouth of the Rio Camboriú, offering city views from zip lines and cable cars.
A major attraction, says 3DA016 Marco, is the Cristo Luz Monument, a 33m statue of Christ, which overlooks the city.
Inspired by the world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro, the Balneário Camboriú version is a little smaller than the latter.
It also portrays Jesus with a “broad-brimmed hat” like circle on his left shoulder, symbolizing the Sun, which houses a spotlight that shines out to the entire city.
As the picture above shows, the Cristo Luz is lit at night and has colourful lights in its body that changes periodically!
3DA016 Marcos has compiled an impressive home-base station which has proven to be advantageous for work on Freeband frequencies.
A horizontally polarized 4 element quad antenna, mounted on a lattice tower, is the station centerpiece and this provides both supreme TX dbi gain and front-to-back RX capability for high quality DX work.
A first-rate yaesu transceiver, with accompanying Zamin ABL800 amplifier which boasts an impressive 400 watt output, is the final piece to the shack jigsaw puzzle, meaning Marcos has every box ticked when it comes to the installation of a world class station.
Seen pictured below with one of his radio mates, 3DA016 Marcos monitors Triple 5 on most occasions when active on the eleven meter band.
He has a keen ear for DX, chasing Islands On The Air (IOTA) entities and rare DXCC in particular.
