*MEET* 34DA010 Saul

34DA010 Saul, from the wonderous island of Tenerife in the Spanish archipelago of the Canary Islands, is welcomed into the Dx Adventure Radio Club in the early days of December 2023.

Like stacks of DA-RC Members, 34DA010 Saul (Seen pictured above) is an authorized ham radio operator; one whom is QRV across the full continuum of amateur bands and with terrific success too.

His main passion, however, is the 11m Band and it’s here where Saul has established a reputation as being one of the finest and most accomplished DX Hunters in the Atlantic!

An imposing 238 Divisions under his belt, in a hobby participation period spanning almost 40 years, sees our newest Canary Islands guy achieve DA-RC Membership via the DX Hunter classification.

See: https://www.delta-alfa.com/about/membership/

During this time, he has held memberships with the Alfa Tango, Maik Uniform and Sugar Delta dx groups respectively but looks forward to writing a bright new chapter in his radio comms career with his new Delta-Alfa callsign.

34DA010 Saul’s home is the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwestern Africa, known for its rugged volcanic isles and spectacular black and white sand beaches.

In a DXCC which consists of some 174 islands—all falling under the reference AF-004 in accordance with the World IOTA Program—34DA010 Saul’s island is Tenerife, the second largest of the group.

Here our prominent DX Hunter resides in Sobradillo, which is situated nearby to the neighborhood La Monja and the suburb Llano del Moro.

According to the atlas, this locality is part of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a port city on the island, known once for its traditional agriculture and fishing.

These days, however, tourism is said to dominate the economy and visitors flock from all over the world to take in the sites and sights.

34DA010 Saul’s city is famous for its beautiful beaches, vibrant downtown area, and rich cultural heritage.

One of the island’s biggest visitor attractions is known to be Loro Parque.

This is regarded as one of the best zoos in the northern hemisphere, with thousands of signature parrots, as well as jaw-dropping dolphin and orca displays.

Additionally, Tenerife’s Siam Park ranks among the greatest waterparks in the world, with high-octane rides, relaxing beaches and wave pools, and a beautiful Thai-themed setting.

Another popular attraction in Saul’s 34 Division home is Parque del Drago, seen pictured above

It stands out for its famous Drago Milenario—the Tenerife dragon tree—which is estimated to be about 800 years old.

Parque del Drago is a lush expanse of botanical gardens covers over 3 hectares, with stunning examples of native flora and rich cultural exhibits that give an insight into the natural history and customs of the Canary Islands.

Judging by various cluster archives, 34DA010 Saul has amassed a DX station capable of accessing any point of the world, any dxpedition, on any frequency.

His transceiver is the highly versatile Yaesu FT-857D; one which provides reliable base station-type performance from an ultra-compact package.

Interestingly, this rig is said to be the world’s smallest HF/VHF/UHF mobile transceiver, one that’s ideal for mobile or external battery portable work too.

Outside 34DA010 Saul’s home, overlooking the nearby streets of Sobradillo is a home-made 1 element Delta Loop antenna.

34DA010 Saul enjoys listening to music and spending time with friends.

Week days, however, are spent working as an Optician.

His role is to help clients choose the right eyeglasses, contact lenses or other vision correction devices.

34DA010 is one of the most active radio ops in the Islas Canarias archipelago.

He’s QRV most days on the international call frequency, 27.555 MHz USB but is also known to flick around the band in search for rare DX.
