*MEET* 13DA278 Rüdiger

The Federal Republic of Germany (13 Division) in Central and Western Europe is home to respected radio comms enthusiast 13DA278 Rüdiger who joins with the Dx Adventure Radio Club (DA-RC) in July 2019.

A proficient and whole-hearted DX Hunter with more than 30 years’ experience in the hobby, 13DA278 Rüdiger has worked and confirmed 217 DXCC entities — predominantly as an old G.R.I. Alfa Tango member (ex-13AT043) but with occasional involvement in other clubs.

Based on this impressive on-air achievement, 13DA278 Rüdiger easily satisfies the DX Hunter requirements of membership with our club, as well as others (See http://www.delta-alfa.com/about/membership/).

Like most DA-RC members, 13DA278 Rüdiger is also practiced in the area of dxpedition work and is committed to undertaking activities in the future under the illustrious DA banner.

In the past, Rüdiger has been QRV from the rare Liechtenstein principality between Austria and Switzerland as 40CA/DX for the Charly Alpha group.

History confirms that he’s also operated as a field station for 13PAT/BF for the Papa Alfa Tango (PAT) group of Portugal from the Province Black forest.

This a mountainous region in southwest of the DXCC, bordering France (14 Division) and known for its dense, evergreen forests and picturesque villages, it’s often associated with the Brothers Grimm fairy tales.

13DA278 Rüdiger’s home QTH is Donaueschingen, some 686m above sea level.

This is located in the Black Forest in the south-west of the state of Baden-Württemberg in the Schwarzwald-Baar Kreis.

Donaueschingen is about 30 km north of the Swiss town of Schaffhausen.

According to Google Earth, it stands near the meeting of the two sources of the Danube River, within a basin in low mountainous terrain.

In addition to being a hot spot for a number of high profile 11m DX Hunters, including 13DA078 Tom, Donaueschingen is perhaps most famous for the “Donaueschinger Musiktage” (i.e. The Donaueschingen Festival for Contemporary Music).

Founded in 1921 and one of the world’s oldest festivals for new music, this immensely popular event takes place every year in October.

Guest composers have included Paul Hindemith, Arnold Schoenberg, Pierre Boulez, Elliott Carter, John Cage, and György Ligeti.

13DA278 Rüdiger’s town is also home to the Museum Art, a contemporary art museum established in 1941.

Famous German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer was born there in 1945.

13DA278 Rüdiger’s current working conditions consist of a Sirtel S-2000 5/8 vertical antenna with 8 radials high above the roof off his home.

A proven performer, this wonderful base antenna reportedly handles 2 KW and operates from 27-29 MHz easily.

Inside the shack, 13DA278 Rüdiger’s transceiver is the classic President Jackson MK1 which operates from 26.065-28.315 MHz.

A simple yet very effective set-up!

When he’s not chasing DX on the 11m band or spending time with his family, Rüdiger enjoys spending time with friends in the intriguing  ‘Forest Spirits & Nightshade Witches’ club.

This is a special group of friends who enjoy celebrating supernatural entities such as witches, spirits, devils and more through paranormal events and festivals that have been such a prominent part of European folklore.

As the pictures show, the mystical costumes used for their parades are intricately detailed and add to the vibrant colour and enjoyment of the events for locals, tourists and club members!

You can hear 13DA278 Rüdiger calling “CQ DX” on the International Call Frequency 27.555 MHz USB when propagation permits or turning the VFO to IOTA or other interesting stations during Freeband DX events!
