14DA/CF13-047, Châteaux Virant

Keen Dx Adventurist 14DA051 Chris continues his COTA tour in early January 2012 with a second activation of the famous ChâteauxVirant (Virant Castle) in French Department 13.  The callsign for this exciting activity will be 14DA/CF13-047.

[While CF stands for Castles and Fortresses, the first two letters or numbers after CF refer to the department where the CF is located.  The suffix, composed of three numbers, is the reference assigned to the castle or fortress, or in this case a Châteaux which also meets guidelines in accordance with the World Castles Activity Group (WCAG)].

Located in the heart of the region of Aix-en-Provence in Southeast France, Château Virant is built on a sloping rocky hillside of vines and olive trees, providing a perfect DXstination for Chris’ portable DX station (See below).

Bathed in sunlight and caressed by the Mistral, the warm Provençal wind, the ancient rock château’s property stretches across 126 hectares of vineyards and 29 hectares of olive trees; two famous symbols of the Mediterranean way of life.

In addition to being an attractive place to stage a COTA DX activity, tourists are able to relax in the shade of pine and olive trees here and taste some of the best wines and olive oils in the region.  Let’s hope Chris is able to enjoy the same experience when his time on the Alinco DX77 transceiver is completed!!!
