14DA/CF13-041 Châteaux Bas

Accomplished DXpeditioner 14DA051 Chris will be active as 14DA/CF13-041 from the historically significant Châteaux Bas on Thursday January 5th 2012 in what will be one of many Castles On The Air (COTA) activities undertaken by Chris in 2012.

[While CF stands for Castles and Fortresses, the first two letters or numbers after CF refer to the department where the CF is located.  The suffix, composed of three numbers, is the reference assigned to the castle or fortress, or in this case a Châteaux which also meets guidelines in accordance with the World Castles Activity Group (WCAG)].

Built on the site of a Gallo-Roman city in Bouches-du-Rhône (Department 13), the Château Bas is constructed of large grey stones which are complemented by the botanical heritage of a 5-hectare park housing rare species and centenarian trees.

Home to the Barons of Boussagues which once towered over nearby villages and provided a perfect vantage point for archers and lookout posts, the original 14th century house was succeeded in the 17th century by an elegant château, untouched by the passage of the centuries.

Now, with surrounding parks and a world class winery, as well as the 12th century built St. Cézaire’s chapel, it makes for a stunning location for 051 Chris and his portable station and an even more exciting opportunity for COTA enthusiasts and DX Hunters in general.

Like Lighthouse On The Air (LOTA) activations, COTA activity presents an opportunity for radio operators to educate and promote the historical significance and architectural uniqueness of castles and Chris is excited at the prospect of doing so with his activity.  In the past, they have also been used in conjunction with important fundraising ventures to assist with the repair or renovation of ‘at risk’ castles.
