172DA/FK-151, M’be Kouen Islet

In exciting news for IOTA Hunters, veteran IOTA DXpeditioner 172DA010 Kevin will be QRV from the diminutive tropical paradise of M’be Kouen Islet in New Caledonia’s Coral Sea from 11-13 November 2011.

This breathtaking DXstination has never before been activated on any band and will be the third *NEW* island Kevin has activated in the waters off Noumea in the last 12 or so months!

The callsign for this awesome activity will be 172DA/FK-151, with FK-151 being the reference allocated to M’be Kouen by Diplome des Iles de la France Metropolitaine (D.I.F.M.) (See http://www.difm.org/).  M’be Kouen also qualifies for OC-032 in accordance with the Radio Society of Great Britain’s IOTA program.

Nestled within the tranquil waters of a tropical lagoon which provides calm anchorage for vessels such as yachts and fishing boats, and just over an hour’s boat ride from the 172 coastline, M’be Kouen Island comprises pristine white sandy beach and sparse vegetation and is surrounded by crystal blue water with two lush thriving coral reefs extending one from each side.

According to 17DA010 Kevin, these are home to some amazing species of sea-life which makes the island an attractive location indeed for snorkelers and scuba divers alike.

As the islet is also a popular nesting place for sea birds, Kevin has outlined a number of different strategies designed to minimise his environmental footprint on the island and so ensure the island’s flora and fauna micro-environments remain intact.  More information on these soon…

A special FK QSL card is available to confirm this island activity from the OC QSL Manager.  For more details, please see below.
