*MEET* 3DA019 Rafael

Ambitious.  Motivated.  Professional.  These are a just few words used by members of the 11m DX Community to describe new DA-RC Member 3DA019 Rafael; a guy who links with our Club in October 2018.

The vast South American country of Brazil is 3DA019 Rafael’s home — more specifically the ‘Ribeirão das Neves’ municipality.

This QTH is located in the state of Minas Gerais in the north of Southeastern Brazil.

The vibrant city belongs to the mesoregion Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte and to the microregion of Belo Horizonte.

Renowned for large sporting and concert events at former world cup venue Mineirão Stadium, restaurants and pizzerias, bars, beauty salons and factories, there’s always something exciting happening in this little corner of Brazil.

A renowned Hunter of IOTA and IWI references and a DX Hunter extraordinaire, 3DA019 Rafael’s journey in 27 MHz radio comms began a decade ago when he was just 12 years old.

As a previous Sugar Delta member from the age of 15 years, he has compiled an impressive 160 DXCC entities on Freeband freqs.

These days, however, radio comms must share Raf’s time with studying for an engineering degree at one of Brazil’s finest universities with ‘mechatronics’ as his chosen field.

‘Mechatronics’ is a multidisciplinary field of engineering that includes a combination of mechanical engineering, robotics, electronics, computer engineering, telecommunications engineering, systems engineering and control engineering.

Like all DA-RCies, 3DA019 Raf demonstrates a passion for dx adventure and a yearning for the elusive pileup.

He rates undertaking a Dxpedition to Francisco Island in Argentina (4 Division) with friends as a highlight of his Freeband hobby experiences so far.

“This gave me the opportunity to discover a taste for the expeditions and islands work,” recounts Raf, “and I’m grateful for that…”

“I intend to be active from more islands in the future with my special Delta-Alfa QRZ when my studies permit…”

When he’s not in the shack with mic in hand, 3DA019 Rafael is busy planning his next holiday destination.

It’s this love of travel which will combine well for dx adventure work in the future, an experience he hopes to share with fellow DA-RC members in Brazil.

3DA019 Rafael is also passionate about cars and high-speed racing, particularly fond of drivers such as polish F1 driver Robert Kubica.

3DA019 Raf’s choice of DX weaponry consists of a 100-watt ICOM IC-751A transceiver and a 25-watt President HR2510 back up rig with a vintage Shure 444 mic.

Home-brew 4 element yagi and 5/8 wave vertical antennas high above his residence in Ribeirão das Neves + a home brew Russian tube amplifier delivering 500-watts of brutal power, combine well to give his TX audio extra oomph!

For this reason, you’re guaranteed to be hearing lots of 3DA019 Raf’s TX audio as Cycle 25 starts to flicker on the horizon.
