*MEET* 34DA010 Angel

Flag of Gran CanariaOne of the most prolific 11m DXpeditioners and DX Hunters in modern times, 34DA010 Angel joins the Dx Adventure Radio Club in October 2017 with glowing recommendations from HQ and fellow DA-RC members.

es-ic)His DXCC is the Canary Islands (34 Division), an archipelago and autonomous community of Spain positioned in the Atlantic Ocean; one which possesses a long and rich 11m culture.

Off the northwestern coast of Africa, southeast of Tenerife and west of Fuerteventura, is 34DA010 Angel’s TX HQ, Gran Canaria Island.

This is where all the action takes place both on and off the airways!

amadores-beach-gran-canariaThe 3rd largest island of the archipelago in both area and altitude and the 2nd most populous island of the Canaries, Gran Canaria Island is called a “Miniature Continent” due to the different climates and variety of landscapes found.

Here, stunning long beaches and dunes of white sand, contrast with green ravines and picturesque villages.

According to Angel, his island, in fact, possesses 32 Natural Protected Spaces, notably the Rural Park of Nublo, The Doramas Jungle, the Azuaje Ravine, Tamadaba, Pino Santo, etc.

Other attractions include Cocodrilos Park, Roque Nublo (an 80 m monolith), Cenobio de Valerón with more than 350 storage cavities, Painted cave of Galdar the most important archaeological park in Canary Islands, or the botanical gardens Jardín Canario (in Tafira Alta) and Cactualdea (in La Aldea de San Nicolás).

canarias-mapWell-known rock formations, says 34DA010 Angel, are El Cura (also known as El Fraile), The Frog (La Rana), Roque Bentayga, the Roque de Gando, and the Peñón Bermejo.

The highest peak of the island is the Pico de las Nieves, at 1950m.

Knowledgeable IOTA Hunters will confirm that all islands in this distinct African archipelago share the IOTA reference AF-004, including Gran Canaria, in accordance with the Radio Society of Great Britain’s IOTA Program.

According to WIKI, the total population of 34DA010 Angel’s island is about 847,830 (in 2015).

This constitutes approximately 40% of the population of the archipelago.

He’s been active on 11m for almost 30 years, dedicating himself to high quality IOTA and LOTA dxpedition work and home shack DXcapades which have netted him more than 200 DXCC as a serious DX Hunter.

For 23 years Angel was a member of Alfa Tango (AT) club.

He was also a member of Lima Radio (LR) from 2013-2015.

34DA010 Angel now balances his commitment to the DA-RC with involvement in the Mike Whiskey club of which he is a founding member.

The opportunity to develop the next generation of radio comms enthusiasts was always at the forefront of his work here.

Angel Portable 2

As you can see, the photographs in this ‘Meet the Members’ article show a guy committed to the adrenalin rush of dx adventure.

Scaling ridges and capes alongside ARLHS referenced lighthouses, armed with rigs, verticals and wire antennas; ducking across to neighbouring islands for contest events such as the WIC and more.

This guy epitomises the famous DA-RC dx adventure spirit!

Angel Portable 3

grand-canariaBut when he’s not out-and-about in the field with a portable station, 34DA010 Angel prefers a different tempo.

In fact, he’s most likely found at home, kicking back with the headphones on and chilling to some music.

wpc1721f14Here, Angel’s choice of genre is ‘Hip hop’, a stylized rhythmic music that usually accompanies rapping.

He evens likes to write his own songs!

Tejeda-Gran-Canaria-If the past is anything to go by, there’s no doubt you’ll be hearing plenty of 34DA010 Angel’s work on 11m frequencies in the years to come.

Whether or not he can belt out a hip hop tune though will depend on propagation and the size of the pile up!
