Map-of-Portugal-with-Portuguese-flagThe Portuguese Republic, a sovereign state located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe (EU), is residence to 31DA057 Fernando who becomes a Dx Adventure Radio Club (DA-RC) member pre-Xmas 2017.

Since 1978, Fernando has graced the airways of the 11m band, establishing himself as a DX Hunter, DXpeditioner and club administrator of the highest order.

In fact, this 40 years + DXperience over various branches of radio comms is regarded by fellow DA-RC members as a tremendous asset for the Club.

Recent Directory updates confirm 31DA057 Fernando’s DXCC is the westernmost country of mainland EU; one which is bordered to the west and south by the Atlantic Ocean and to the north and east by Spain (30 Division).

lagos-beachMedieval castles, cobblestone villages, captivating cities, golden beaches and more…31 Division, by all reports, is a fascinating DXCC entity indeed.

As rumour has it, the Celts, Romans, Visigoths, Moors and Christians all left their mark on this Iberian nation which continues to churn out some of the 11m DX Community’s most respected hobbyists.

megalight-evoraHere you can gaze upon 20,000-year-old stone carvings in the Vila Nova de Foz Côa, watch the sunset over mysterious megaliths outside Évora (Pictured left) or lose yourself in the elaborate corridors of Unesco World Heritage Sites in Tomar, Belém, Alcobaça or Batalha.

You can visit palaces set above mist-covered woodlands, craggy clifftop castles and stunningly preserved medieval town centres; go hiking amid the granite peaks of Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês or take in the pristine scenery and historic villages of the little-explored Beiras.

imagesInside Portugal, a civil parish called Póvoa de Santa Iria e Forte da Casa, in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, is where 31DA057 Fernando calls home.

On the River Tagus, Póvoa de Santa Iria is edged by wetlands that are rich in birdlife and roughly 20 minutes on the train from the centre of Lisbon.

vila-franca-de-xira-portugal-7Fernando’s QTH is a mostly residential city, but has an exquisite Renaissance palace and the mysterious ruins of a castle which has already been identified as a possible Castles On The Air (COTA) opportunity.

The hills to the west have vineyards and stables for the lusitano horse breed while popular QSO topics, propagation permitting, will include Parque Ribeirinha, Quinta Municipal da Piedade, Castelo de Pirescoxe, Palácio de Valflores, Lisbon Oceanarium, Ponte Vasco da Gama and more.

Grilled sardines with salad, bread and potato31DA057 Fernando lists cooking as one of his fave pastimes and if Portugal’s reputation as a culinary capital of Europe is anything to go by then dinner at his place should be on the cards for everyone.

Freshly baked bread, olives, cheese, red wine or crisp vinho verde (young wine), chargrilled fish, cataplana (seafood stew), smoked meats — the Portuguese have perfected the art of cooking simple, delicious meals and our Fernando is said to be no different.

Over 800 km of coast offers unique places to soak up the splendour with dramatic end-of-the-world cliffs, surf stellar breaks off dune-covered beaches and sandy islands fronting calm blue seas.

He combines this with a love of fishing and photography; interests which add to a very long list of fascinating traits that make Fernando a perfect fit for the adventure theme of his new club.
