*MEET* 18DA027 Akis

From the Greek capital city and heart of Ancient Greece, Athens, resides new Dx Adventure Radio Club (DA-RC) member 18DA027 Akis who signs with our club in April, 2019.

Licensed ham operator and long-time 11m band DX Hunter, 18DA027 Akis is one of the most passionate hobbyists known in this part of the globe; a very friendly guy with enormous skills, expertise and interests in most things radio comms.

Covering a 40 years footprint in the hobby, in fact, 18DA027 Akis has ticked off so many boxes that most European guys could only dream of…

Firstly, he’s been QRV as both a maritime mobile (MM) in Salamina Bay and as an aeronautical station.

From the geographical center of the Attica peninsula, in the suburb of Nea Filadelfeia, he’s also delved into the exciting world of dxpedition work as an individual and in teams, activating a number of Greek lighthouses for LOTA.

With an abundance of incredible islands on the air (IOTA) dxstinations not far away in the Gulf of Elefsina, no doubt he’ll be a valuable member of DA-RC DXpedition Teams in the years to come too!

18DA027 Akis has even executed much sought after DX from the heavens in SOTA (Summits On The Air), carried out ‘Field Day’ (FD) ops, and so much more.

In fact ‘field ops’ appears to be a favourite pastime indeed for our latest Greek member who’s ventured into a number of ‘unusual’ portable operations…

He’s regularly out-and-about performing backpacking, motorcycle or bicycle operations which always holds a captivated audience on and off the air ways, as you can imagine.

18DA027 Akis also enjoys ragchew, low power QRP ops and short wave listening (SWL).

Akis is a former member of the Sierra Golf DX Group of Greece and he has many fond memories with this club from the peak of the last cycle.

His callsign here was 18SG027 and a quick log search confirms he was a prominent entry into the logs of most European DXpeditions during that time.

In this period, Akis collected many hundreds of QSL cards from all over the world, easily satisfying the ‘DX Hunter’ requirements of our Club’s stringent membership guidelines [See http://www.delta-alfa.com/about/membership/].

When he’s not busy chasing colourful QSL cards from some of the world’s rarest DXCC entities, 18DA027 Akis enjoys going on long rides on his motorbike (See pictured above) through the local countryside.

He also enjoys reading books, watching movies, listening to music and dining out at restaurants and cafes with his partner and children.

18DA027 Akis’ QTH in southeastern Europe, on the southernmost tip of the Balkan peninsula, is still dominated by 5th-century BC landmarks and these are the most famous features of his local area.

They include the Acropolis, a famous hilltop citadel topped with ancient buildings like the colonnaded Parthenon temple.

The Acropolis Museum, along with the National Archaeological Museum, preserves sculptures, vases, jewellery and more from Ancient Greece.

Along with other prominent members of our 18 Division Team, 18DA027 Akis represents an exciting contact indeed for DX Hunters on any of the bands in the future when propagation permits.
